Conflict Management Essay Example Essay Example
Conflict Management Essay Example Paper Conflict Management Essay Introduction First of all, conflict is described as the expressed struggle of interconnected parties who perceive incompatible goals and interference from each other in attaining certain goals (Rothwell). The book describes two major types of conflict, constructive and destructive conflict. Destructive Conflict- characterized by domination, escalation, retaliation, competition and inflexibility (Rothwell) Constructive Conflict- characterized by a we-orientation, cooperation, and flexibility (Rothwell) However there are other types of conflict in which the book touches on, those are: Task conflict- conflicts concerning disagreements over the content of task being carried out Task conflicts generally have a positive outcome to it. High disagreement in a group usually results into better understanding of the certain task therefore producing a better outcome. Examples include: ââ¬â Juror #8ââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ënot guiltyââ¬â¢ vote during the preliminary vote. This opened the door for the group to discuss the case and re-examine the evidence, resulting into a unanimous ââ¬Ënot guiltyââ¬â¢ verdict, favoring the defendant. Examination of the murder weapon, re-enactment of the old manââ¬â¢s testimony (regarding seeing the defendant running down the stairs after the killing), and analyzing the womanââ¬â¢s testimony that she saw the defendant stab the victim through the L-train windows Relationship Conflict- conflicts concerning the interpersonal animosities and tensions between individuals themselves rather than the task at hand Relationship conflicts between group members generally have a negative outcome to it. Conflict Management Essay Body Paragraphs Relationship conflict lowers task performance by distracting membersââ¬â¢ attention and reducing each individualââ¬â¢s ability to concentrate on the task at hand. Examples include: ââ¬â Most parts of the movie showed relationship conflicts, this was visible in the behavior of the jurors. Although most of these relationship conflicts easily de-escalated, some of the stronger relationship conflicts remained. The relationship conflicts between jurors #3 and #10 versus the rest of the group stayed steady throughout much of the movie. Interestingly, the relationship conflict among the jurors helped them or made them realize that the facts presented in court during the trial were not accurate and that there was a reasonable doubt that the defendant was not guilty of the charges. Values Conflict- conflicts cause by perceived and/or actual incompatible beliefs; values that people use to give meaning to their daily lives Values conflicts or conflicts of beliefs arise when people att empt to force one set of values on others or lay claim to certain values or beliefs that do not allow or are not appropriate. One good example of conflict of values or beliefs is when juror #7 changed his vote to ââ¬Ënot-guiltyââ¬â¢ and when asked why he said it was because he had had enough. In response, juror #11 approached him and told him to do the right thing and that he should vote ââ¬Ënot guiltyââ¬â¢ only if he truly believed that the defendant was not guilty, not simply because he had had enough and had a ticket to a baseball game. Approaches to conflict and principles of conflict management: There are several different styles of approaching conflict, these include: Collaborating- a win-win style of managing conflict. Approach in which both parties attempt to find ways of solving the problem Accommodating- also sometimes referred to as ââ¬ËYieldingââ¬â¢ and is a win-lose style of conflict management. Accommodating results in one party accepting the other pa rtyââ¬â¢s solution to the problem Compromising- a lose-lose style of conflict management in which both parties sacrifice something in order to achieve the goal that both parties are working for Avoiding- also sometimes referred to as ââ¬ËWithdrawingââ¬â¢ and is a lose-lose style of conflict management. When a party avoids the situation, both parties lose at the potential to completely solve the problem, sacrificing a resolution for all Competing- also sometimes referred to as ââ¬ËPower or Forceââ¬â¢ and is win-lose situation. In a situation where one party competes with the other, they often force their ideas or goals onto the other party and the other party is therefore defeated, lessening the value of the groupââ¬â¢s relationship as a whole Examples include: ââ¬â Juror #3 and #10 approached conflicts by yelling and disagreeing with anything that went against their stance of guilty. They were using offensive communication patterns, which constitute destructive conflict. ââ¬â Juror #8 was using means of constructive conflict. He was being flexible and cooperative in explaining his ââ¬Ënot guiltyââ¬â¢ verdict to the rest of the jurors. When faced with adversity or different scenarios, he carefully considered the opposing statements and proved them to be wrong or at least put doubt in the other jurors minds ââ¬â Juror #2 approached conflict by being accommodating at first. He just thought the boy was guilty and didnââ¬â¢t know why. It was a result of groupthink in which he felt the need to agree with the majority of the group ââ¬â Juror #1, who is supposed to be the foreman, makes feeble attempts at being a leader. A lot of avoiding techniques were used by him, so the other jurors wouldnââ¬â¢t argue or fight ââ¬â Juror #5 was very passive at the beginning. He did not make an attempt until to argue any points until the evidence of the switchblade was being discussed which was honorable on his part considering that he was educated in the common usage of a switchblade ââ¬â Juror #3 was very competitive. He kept interrupting and ambushing any opposing facts How conflicts develop: Reasons for why conflicts begin, nature of the conflict and the nature of the relationship Conflict development- Conflicts arise when not all members of a party are satisfied with the goal or a goal cannot be met for an assigned task (this may happen due to a various reasons) Nature of the conflict- Finding reasons for why there is conflict is necessary in solving it. The conflict can stem from the content of the conflict or the relationship Nature of the relationship- Are the conflicts not related to the task and are they solely conflicts within the relationships? The nature of relationship may also depend on how the conflict has developed or it may serve as reasons for why the conflict is continuing to be provoked Examples include: ââ¬â majority of the jurors conflicts were content issues ââ¬â juror #3 wa s struggling for power over the jury to stray to a guilty vote ââ¬â minor conflicts can spiral into major conflicts due to things ike stress, being faced with conflict and possible failure, or even working for conditions like the heat ââ¬â group members have a tendency to overreact when threats or offenses are perceived for members with more power ââ¬â overreaction can have a ripple effect or chain reaction on the whole group ââ¬â juror #3 spends much of his time arguing and yelling at the jurors voting not guilty in an attempt to bully them to change their vote to guilty in hopes of winning a guilty verdict ââ¬â with the combination of stress from the case, the heat, and overall discomfort, the jurors lashed out at one another, therefore initiating conflict ââ¬â when other jurors tried to convince juror #3 that the boy on trial was not guilty, he spiraled out of control and started yelling at everything, even to the extent of ripping up the picture of he and his son in sheer frustration ââ¬â juror #3ââ¬â¢s acts seemed too dramatic for the other jurors and also made them uncomfortable enough to leave the table Escalation and De-escalation of conflicts and whether or not they were resolved Escalation- beginning or opening of conflict, the disagreement that transforms into the problem De-escalation- point after the climax has been reached, the time in which the excitement of the conflict has ended and a resolution is soon to take place Resolution- an end to the struggle, settling the conflict, reaching an agreement Examples include: Escalation: -the conflict between the jurors was a destructive conflict because: -there was lot of shouting -also some men were verbally aggressive -One man was even physically aggressive -actually everybody was angry some were really furious, and some other were less furious -for example, #3 and #10 were mostly in charge of the conflict because they were yelling and verbally aggressive at those jurors who believed that the boy might be not guilty -they did not want to listen to them -thought that the boy is guilty and it cannot be the other way -#10 became physically aggressive because he was angry at the architect -but some jurors stopped him to prevent fighting -in addition, there were conflict spirals that escalated the conflict De-escalation/resolution: -there were lot of escalations, thus it needed to be deescalated and resolved -some jurors used the method smoothing which means calming down for example, #1 was a coach got angry because he thought that a certain person was not satisfied with his job a leader, he wanted to give up his position -but a juror came up to #1 and tried to calm him down -the juror and everybody else told him that they were satisfied with his job and that he should stay as the leader -also there was confrontation -which means like trying to solve the problem -for example, at the end #3 was the only person left who believed still that the boy was guil ty -#8 tried to talk with him about it ââ¬â but he yelled, trying to convince everybody that he is right -everybody was starring at him -after all he gave up -the conflict was resolved Conclusion and conflict management within the movie The film, 12 Angry Men represented many types of conflicts and the ways in which they were managed. The film included the different types of conflict that occurred in the film, both constructive and destructive conflict and how each attributed to the goal that was ultimately reached. It also had displays of the different approaches to conflict management and the different principles of conflict management, including accommodating, collaborating, compromising, avoiding and competing which were executed by each of the different members of the jury. And the entire film was able to show us ways in which many different conflicts developed, then escalated, de-escalated, and finally came to a resolution. The film provided us with scenarios in which we c ould find ways to relate to how and when we can encounter conflicts, how to recognize them, and hopefully ways to solve them. A woman torn Professor Ramos Blog
Woman Hollering/ A woman torn Cleofilas was battling two major issues. The pressure from opposition regarding stigmas about woman in her culture and the battle between her and her husband. Cleofilas is the only girl among six brothers, her fatherââ¬â¢s only daughter. She loves her telenovelas. She romanticizes love and idealizes her future husband. Her dad gives her away after a quick engagement to Juan Pedro. Shortly after, she is shocked to learn that he is abusive. Juan Pedro starts hitting her. Cleofilas is a passionate woman. She is full of emotion and dreams. From a young age she has known she has to live up to a certain image. This story is of a woman torn. Torn between having to live up to a stereotype and having to leave her husband. Torn between knowing what Mexican culture expects of women and learning the harsh realities of her circumstances. Even though she was expected to Cleofilas still wanted to get married. She was mesmerized by the ideal of love that soured. Loving so strongly that it was them or no one. She watched the telenovelas and loved watching Lucia in her dramatic love scenes. ââ¬Å"Somehow one ought to live oneââ¬â¢s life like that, donââ¬â¢t you think?â⬠(Cisneros 45) Cleofilas said after watching Lucia sing the song ââ¬Å"You or no oneâ⬠in her favorite telenovela. What little girl doesnââ¬â¢t dream of her Prince Charming and her Wedding day and her Happily ever after? This part of the expectation she could handle. However certain parts of these expectations are impossible to live up to. For example, Cleofilas is from Mexico, over there, women are supposed to strive to be perfect like the virgin Mary. They could turn into La Llorona who drowned her children, or La Malinche who betrayed her country for love. These are the stereotypes woman have, only three bad options. Not only that but when woman from Mexico get married, they are married thatââ¬â¢s it. They must deal with it. They must stay in the marriage no matter what. Even if there is infidelity or even violence. This is impossible to achieve therefore it becomes something she battles with. Marianismo is an aspect of the female gender role in the machismo of Hispanic American Folk Culture. It is the veneration for feminine virtues like purity and moral strength. This term derives from the catholic belief in Mary, mother of Jesus as both a virgin and a mother. She became a subject of veneration and admiration. From this is derived the idea that an ideal woman should be spiritually immaculate and eternally self-giving. (Wikipedia) This is an Ideal of Mexican/Latina culture, something engrained in woman from a young age. Marianismo is heavily engrained in the culture and yet another reason why feminism is needed. Marianismo can do a lot of damage to girls and woman. ââ¬Å"We grow up afraid to get into trouble, even if itââ¬â¢s for a good cause. We grow up afraid period and allow boys and men to take the lead in nearly everything.â⬠( hiplatina.com/marianismo) There is nothing wrong with this, only with the notion that prevents girls from knowing they can be and do other things as well. (hiplatina.com/marianismo). This article describes the role of marianismo and how it is ultimately damaging to woman. Subtly letting them know they only have one role in life. Even from a young age she would retreat to the telenovelas. She loved watching those strong women in the spotlight. But now she couldnââ¬â¢t have her telenovelas, they didnââ¬â¢t have a tv. So, she read her love story, her book was the closest thing she had. Though now and again when her husband was away, she managed to watch a few episodes that were on at Soledadââ¬â¢s house. At least she has these few escapes, she needs them in order to deal with her other battle. Meanwhile, she found herself literally living between loneliness and pain. Her house was between the homes of two older woman named Soledad and Delores, whose names literally mean loneliness and pain. Both these ladies had lost loved ones and were still living with faded memories of the past. This situation wasnââ¬â¢t only literal, it was true in every sense of the word and made the battles that much harder. She was stuck here. Fighting these battles alone. Lonely and stuck she then learned her husband hit her. ââ¬Å"The first time it happened she was so surprised she didnââ¬â¢t cry out or try to defend herselfâ⬠, (Cisneros 47) Cleofilas explains after he hit her for the first time. She was shocked. She stood motionless and did nothing but reach to the heat on her mouth and stare at the blood on her hand. Sometimes in the morning before he opens his eyes, she thinks how this is the man she has waited her whole life for. She makes excuses for him; she tells herself he is a good man and reminds herself why she loves him. He weeps like a child, tears of repentance and shame after each time he strikes her. At first only with his hand then later throwing a book at her. She thinks up excuses to tell the doctor about why she has all those black and blue marks everywhere. She has to psych herself up to ask her husband to take her to her doctor appointment. She doesnââ¬â¢t complain about the abuse, itââ¬â¢s almost like she just goes along with it, accepting the way it is. Its as if sheââ¬â¢s automatically complying with role of the stereotype. People do not understand how difficult it is to escape. No one on the outside knows what is happening because the abuser has the victim trapped and alone. (www.thehotline.org) Says Francesca in her story on her own abuse on the National Domestic Violence Hotline Website. Cleofilas had the same problem. She wasnââ¬â¢t allowed to drive. ââ¬Å"Because the towns here are built so that you have to depend on husbands. Or you stay home.â⬠(Cisneros 51) She was describing her situation. Even if she wanted to leave there was no place to go. She canââ¬â¢t go back though, not to those never-ending chores and six good for nothing brothers. Even though her father did say he would never abandon her. What would the neighbors say? All that gossip. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s your husband?â⬠, (Cisneros 50) those women would ask in the snobby busybody way woman do. The fear of people knowing she failed was always in the back of her mind. In the doctorââ¬â¢s office they noticed her bruises and her tears and helped her. She was afraid of him, even that day, afraid she might get caught trying to leave. She always remembered her father would never abandon her and she is his only daughter. She knew this was her chance, that she had to go. A ride to the bus station was arranged. She can go back home now. In these moments the weight of her battles is gone. Help is all she needed. A pickup truck pulled up to pick her up, it was her ride. Felice was her name; she was so independent. She didnââ¬â¢t even have a husband. The pickup was hers. She picked it out and was paying for it on her own. Her language was foul too. ââ¬Å"what kind of talk was that coming from a woman.â⬠(Cisneros 55) Cleofilas was amazed, this woman was independent. She was not weighed down by Marianismo, she was free to be herself. As they drove over the bridge, she knew she was free. Anselm's Cosmological Argument Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Anselm's Cosmological Argument - Essay Example The above proof is crucial in that ultimately Anselm has to prove that God is the first cause of all things and of itself. Without the above conclusion, there would be some things that God must not have caused. à If there is more than one cause, then a) all things are the one being through which they all exist, or b) all things exist separately each by virtue of itself or they cause one another to exist. The next part of the proof is where Anselm goes back to each of the three parts of statement #5 and disproves each of the three subparts in order to prove in the end that there is only one being that caused the existence of everything: Using the notion of ââ¬Å"masterâ⬠and ââ¬Å"slave,â⬠it is impossible for one being to confer existence on the one being that had originally conferred existence on the former. Moreover, all things ââ¬Å"do not at all exist mutually,â⬠which means that it would be impossible that each one would cause one another, and so there must not be more than one being. Based on statement #6, #7, and #8, and employing elimination in #5, Anselm arrives at the conclusion that there must be only one thing that causes the existence of all things including itself. After Anselm has concluded that there must only be one being that caused the existence of all things including itself, his final task, through the last two paragraphs, was to prove that this one cause was the greatest of all beings: Such an ability to cause itself and others is, therefore, the attribute of the greatest being, while all other things cannot cause themselves. The last part of the proof is the part where Anselm tries to prove that this one being which is the greatest of all is God.

Library Worksheets Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Library Worksheets - Essay Example On this link, I found a number of search feedbacks. From the different options provided, I chose the link and then typed the word globalization. From the search I was able to get the needed information based on the topic of discussion. Reich (5) defines globalization in the text as the tendency to transform the economic and political aspects to match the international standards. I would not use this source for various reasons. One reason why the source is not viable is that it was written in 1998 and globalization is a dynamic concept and the various definitions can be changed based on the prevailing circumstances taking place in the international system. Consequently, the definition is not clear as othe3r concepts are used to explain globalization ensuring sustained confusion in the meaning. In fact, the source as established and the inherent definition may not validate the concept of globalization in the modern dispensation. The Google search is a very effective tool for looking up information. Immediately I keyed in the information, I managed to get the information I needed in an instant. However, the searches bring about a number numerous information that can otherwise confuse someone though somebody with a stable mind and focus can easily spot the information needed. The article provides a broad perspective over which a number of issues can be painted in so far as the concept of globalization is concerned. The information is precise and current to the components that define the concept of globalization. The search used for this part of the exercise was the articles and journals that are found online. The information in the articles is well researched on and precise to a larger extent. Most of the information is current and well referenced. The source defines the concept of globalization in varied and different ways. Globalization in the
